Violent Crimes
Each year over 16,000 police departments send figures for the number of crimes reported in their jurisdictions to FBI headquarters in Washington.  The resulting detailed report is called "Crime by County" which the FBI will send to you for a fee.  But there are some problems with this.  Crime rates can vary among cities within a county.   Also, local crime rates are usually figured per 100,000 full-time residents.  But a state like Florida draws millions of visitors every year and this will make some areas look worse than they are.  On the other hand, victims often believe that filing a complaint is useless and this will affect the accuracy of published crime indexes.
